What is an FCE?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a broad term to describe the physical assessment of an individual's ability to perform work-related activity. A well-designed FCE should be comprehensive in terms of encompassing the physical demands of work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor. Here at North Shore Myofascial Physical Therapy, we can allot as much time as needed to perform the various exercises and tests. An FCE usually consists of a medical review, musculoskeletal screening, and physical ability testing. FCEs are done on a one-to-one basisand may range in length from 4 to 6 hours. An FCE may take place over two consecutive days.

What are the Purposes and Applications of the FCE?

The FCE can be used to determine:

Goals for rehabilitation or readiness for discharge

Return to work status (including full duty, modified/transitional duty)

Case settlement
Disability status
Ability to meet job demands as part of the hiring process (for pre-employment/post-offering testing)
